PMDD Support

What is PMDD?

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a chronic illness that affects 3-8% of folks who menstruate. The predominant theory is that PMDD is caused by something encoded in your cells, causing your body to react to the typical hormonal fluctuations that occur between ovulation and menstruation as if it is in under attack, resulting in an extended period of nervous system dysregulation. Its symptoms are varied, disruptive, emotional, and physical. While PMDD can coexist with other diagnoses (and can look similar to BPD, bipolar disorder, and PTSD), the distinguishing factor is timing: PMDD symptoms begin sometime after ovulation and usually dissipate by day two of your period. There is no test for PMDD, and no cure, though there are resources and tools for managing its effects.

SYMPTOMS CAN INCLUDE

  • Irritability

  • Breast tenderness

  • Rejection sensitivity

  • Fatigue

  • Brain fog

  • Rapid mood cycling

  • Relationship conflict

  • Low self-esteem

  • Joint/muscle pain

  • Suicidal ideation

  • Anxiety

  • Insomnia

  • Overwhelm

HOW CAN I HELP?

I know firsthand how challenging and isolating it can feel. I was diagnosed with PMDD in my twenties, and struggled with increasingly severe symptoms until I had an oophorectomy (ovary removal) in 2019. A lack of available information and resources meant that I had to do a lot of my own research and treatment trial and error, turning me into something of an accidental expert. I want to help folks who have (or think they might have) PMDD with the knowledge, tools, and community that I needed. Earlier this year, I facilitated a small group coaching series for folks with PMDD, and I plan to start another series in the near future. I am also working to put that content together as an online course. I am currently available for individual or couples’ PMDD support coaching. The process is the same as with sex and relationship coaching: I take a holistic and collaborative approach, and we work together to create a plan that best meets your needs.
